Probing Newton’s constant on vast scales: Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati gravity, cosmic acceleration, and large scale structure

چکیده
The nature of the fuel that drives today’s cosmic acceleration is an open and tantalizing mystery. The brane-world theory of Dvali, Gabadadze, and Porrati ~DGP! provides a context where late-time acceleration is driven not by some energy-momentum component ~dark energy!, but rather is the manifestation of the excruciatingly slow leakage of gravity off our four-dimensional world into an extra dimension. At the same time, DGP gravity alters the gravitational force law in a specific and dramatic way at cosmologically accessible scales. We derive the DGP gravitational force law in a cosmological setting for spherical perturbations at subhorizon scales and compute the growth of large-scale structures. We find that a residual repulsive force at large distances gives rise to a suppression of the growth of density and velocity perturbations. Explaining the cosmic acceleration in this framework leads to a present day fluctuation power spectrum normalization s8 <0.8 at about the two-sigma level, in contrast with observations. We discuss further theoretical work necessary to go beyond our approximations to confirm these results.

متن کاملMimicking Λ with a spin - two ghost condensate
We propose a simple higher-derivative braneworld gravity model which contains a stable accelerating branch, in the absence of cosmological constant or potential, that can be used to describe the late time cosmic acceleration. This model has similar qualitative features to that of Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati, such as the recovery of four-dimensional gravity at subhorizon scales, but unlike that case...
متن کاملA Supernova Brane Scan
We consider a 'brane-world scenario' recently introduced by Dvali, Gabadadze and Porrati, and subsequently proposed as an alternative to a cosmological constant in explaining the current acceleration of the universe. We show that, contrary to these claims, this proposal is already strongly disfavoured by the available Type Ia Supernovae, Cosmic Microwave Background and cluster data.
متن کاملGravitational Leakage into Extra Dimensions: Probing Dark Energy Using Local Gravity
The braneworld model of Dvali–Gabadadze–Porrati (DGP) is a theory where gravity is modified at large distances by the arrested leakage of gravitons off our four-dimensional universe. Cosmology in this model has been shown to support both “conventional” and exotic explanations of the dark energy responsible for today’s cosmic acceleration. We present new results for the gravitational field of a ...
متن کاملSolar System planetary motions and modified gravity
According to the braneworld model of gravity by Dvali, Gabadadze and Porrati, our Universe is a four-dimensional space-time brane embedded in a larger, infinite five-dimensional bulk space. Contrary to the other forces constrained to remain on the brane, gravity is able to explore the entire bulk getting substantially modified at large distances. This model has not only cosmological consequence...
